Linotype (English spelling)

Japanese: ライノタイプ（英語表記）linotype

A type of casting machine for Western characters. It was invented and completed by the American O. Mergenthaler around 1900. Unlike Japanese characters, Western characters only have the 28 letters of the alphabet and their variations. Therefore, instead of casting each character one by one, the type matrix is manipulated one line at a time, and molten metal is poured into it to cast each line, hence the name Linotype. The operation is the same as that of a typewriter, and the completed type is automatically produced when you type. It is widely used in Europe and the United States, mainly by newspapers.

欧文用の鋳植機の一種。 1900年頃にアメリカの O.マーゲンターラーが発明完成したもの。和文の場合とは違い，欧文はアルファベット 28文字とそのバリエーションにすぎない。そのため1文字ずつ鋳造するのではなく，活字母型を1行分操作して，1行分これに溶融地金を流し込み鋳造する方式をいい，この1行分ずつという意味から，ライノタイプの名称が生れた。操作方法はタイプライタと同じで，打鍵すると自動的に完成活字ができてくるもので，新聞社を中心に，欧米では広く普及している。
