Compounds of fluorine and uranium with uranium in the oxidation states III, IV, V, and VI are commonly known. [Uranium(III) fluoride] Chemical formula: UF 3 . Uranium(IV) fluoride is obtained by heating UF 4 with metallic aluminum or uranium. Black hexagonal crystals. Specific gravity: 9.18. Melting point: 1427°C. Insoluble in water. Slowly oxidizes in cold water, becoming green gelatinous. Decomposes and dissolves in hot water. Easily soluble in hot nitric acid. [Uranium(IV) fluoride] The chemical formula is UF 4 . It can be obtained by reducing uranium(IV) oxide UO 2 by heating it to 550-650 °C in a stream of hydrogen fluoride, or by heating ammonium hydrogen fluoride (NH 4 HF 2) to 150 °C to produce 2UF 4 ・NH 4 F, which is then heated further to 450 °C.
