…There is a considerable amount of interstellar absorption even in globular clusters, especially those close to the center of the galaxy. In 1930, RJ Trumpler revealed the fact of absorption, and in 1936, J. Stebbins and AE Whitford applied this to determining the distances of globular clusters, resulting in a significant revision of the size of the galaxy to 160,000 x 130,000 x 110,000 light years, and the distance of the sun from the center of the galaxy to 33,000 light years. There has also been much discussion about the absolute magnitude of the RR Lyrae type variable stars used to determine the distances of globular clusters, and in the early days, a value of 0.0 magnitude (photographic absolute magnitude) was adopted, but as of the early 1980s, a value of 0.6 magnitude (visual absolute magnitude) has become the standard value. …
