Samegawa [Village] - Samegawa

Japanese: 鮫川[村] - さめがわ

A village in Higashi Shirakawa District, southeastern Fukushima Prefecture. Population 4,957 (1995). Located in the southern part of the Abukuma Highlands, the Samegawa and Watarasegawa rivers run through the gently sloping mountains. There are scattered plains along the coast, but most of the area is forested wilderness. Since the Middle Ages, the area has been called Akasaka-go, and Akasaka-Nakano in the center was a key location on the highway connecting Tanagura and Asakawa in the Nakadori area with Nakoso in the Hamadori area. Konjac yam and tobacco leaf cultivation, as well as livestock farming, are thriving, and since 1975 the Abukuma Mountains Development Project has been underway, opening up pastureland and pastures.

福島県南東部，東白川郡の村。人口4957(1995)。阿武隈高地南部に位置し，なだらかな山地をぬって鮫川，渡瀬（わたらせ）川が流れる。沿岸に平地が点在するが，大部分は山林原野である。中世以降赤坂郷と呼ばれ，中心の赤坂中野は中通りの棚倉や浅川と，浜通りの勿来（なこそ）を結ぶ街道の要地であった。コンニャク芋や葉タバコの栽培，畜産が盛んで，1975年からは阿武隈山系開発事業が進められ，放牧場，牧草地が開かれている。
