A statue made by layering paper. There are many examples of this among dolls from the early modern period onwards, but earlier ones are rare, and one remaining example is the standing Manjusri Bodhisattva statue at Chuguji Temple (height 52.3cm), made in 1269 (Bun'ei 6). Currently it is hardened with lacquer, but originally it was made by layering several sheets of paper pasted onto a core of two scrolls of sutras, and the details were finished by pasting paper on top of a core of paper string or similar. Several other Buddhist statues from before the Edo period are known. [Soejima Hiromichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
