...A perennial plant of the Albizia family that grows in rice paddies, shallow ponds, and waterways (illustration). It produces underground runners that bear small corms at the end. The leaves are basal. The leaves of young plants are linear and submerged, but later leaves have long stalks and grow upright above the water surface. The leaf blade is arrowhead-shaped with two lobes at the base, and the terminal lobe is 7-15 cm long. From August to October, it produces upright flower stalks 20-80 cm tall, bearing whorls of three flowers. Large inflorescences have compound whorls. Male flowers are borne at the top of the inflorescence, and female flowers at the bottom. ...
