Angevin Empire

…They dominated almost the entire Middle Ages in England, but the period is divided into two periods at the end of the reign of Edward I in the early 14th century.
[First half]
The Plantagenet dynasty began with the accession of Henry II (1154-1189) to the throne after the civil wars of King Stephen. He assumed the position of ruler of the vast Angevin Empire, having acquired Anjou, Maine, and Touraine from his father's side, Normandy from his mother's side, and Aquitaine from Queen Eleanor (formerly the wife of Louis VII of France). The political and cultural center of the empire was on the continent, and England, located on its outskirts, provided the Angevins with the throne and the manpower and material resources for their sovereign's activities on the continent.

From Henry II

…His father was Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, a powerful French nobleman, and his mother Matilda, the daughter of Henry I, King of England and Duke of Normandy, was initially married to the German Emperor Henry V, but died. Henry II inherited vast estates from both his father's and mother's side, and further married Eleanor, wife of Louis VII of France, and combined them with her inheritance of the Marquis of Aquitaine to create the Angevin Empire, which stretched from the Pyrenees in the west to southern France. However, only England was his property, and all the continental territories that made up the core of the empire were held as feudal vassals of the French king. …
