A city in central Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. It occupies the basin of the upper reaches of the Oi River, the upper reaches of the Abe River, and the tributary Warashina River, and is long and narrow from north to south, reaching the northernmost tip of the prefecture in the north and facing Suruga Bay in the south. The city is centered on the alluvial fan of the Abe River and spreads out to the southern foot of Mount Shizuhata, and is the political and cultural center of the prefecture. In the past, the provincial capital of Suruga Province was located here, and it was called Fuchu or Sunpu. During the Sengoku period, it developed as a castle town for the Imagawa clan, and a grid-like cityscape was created. During the Edo period, it flourished as a post town on the Tokaido Road, and after the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who retired here, a castle lord was stationed here. It was renamed Shizuoka in 1869. The area around Sunpu Castle Park, the ruins of the castle, is an area for government offices and schools, and to the south of that, shopping districts such as Gofuku-cho have developed. Since ancient times, the woodworking industry, such as wooden lacquer products like geta (Japanese wooden clogs), dressing tables, and Hina dolls, furniture, fittings, and tea manufacturing, has been thriving. The city's manufacturing shipment value was 1.6353 trillion yen (2003). In recent years, the electrical equipment industry, publishing and printing, metal products, and pulp and paper industries have also grown. Tea and mandarin oranges are produced in abundance, and strawberries are a specialty. The Tokaido Main Line, Shinkansen, Tomei and Shin-Tomei Expressways run through the city, and Shizuoka University, Toro ruins, Mt. Kuno, and Shizugiyama Kofun (historic site) are located in the city. In April 2003, it merged with Shimizu City. In April 2005, it became a city designated by government ordinance. Aoi Ward, Suruga Ward, and Shimizu Ward were established. In March 2006, Kambara Town, Ihara District, was incorporated, and in November 2008, Yui Town, Ihara District, was incorporated. Area is 1411.90 km2 . 716,197 people (2010). → Related topics Okabe [town] | Okitsu | Yoshikawa clan | Shizuoka [prefecture] | Seikenji | Maruko | Miho no Matsubara Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
