A general term for insects belonging to the Ithomiinae subfamily of the Danaidae family of the Lepidoptera order. They are sometimes treated as an independent family. Several hundred species are known. They span 3.5-8cm. Because their wings are elongated and thin, and their bodies are long, they are also called dragonfly butterflies. The name Ithomiinae comes from the fact that the wings of many species are almost completely devoid of scales, and are transparent or translucent. They have brown, yellow, and black horizontal bands, and many of them mimic certain members of the Nymphalidae family. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
