[Born] 1556. Capolago
Died January 30, 1629. Italian architect in Rome. Pioneer of Baroque architecture. He moved to Rome to study under his uncle D. Fontana, and from 1608 to 1615, under the orders of Pope Paul V, he expanded the nave, portico, and façade of St. Peter's Basilica. He also designed the façade of the Basilica of Santa Susanna (1597-1603), which became the model for 17th century façades, the Basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle (24-29), famous for its enormous vault, and Palazzo Barberini (construction started in 28, completed by G. Bernini after his death).
