...The word comes from the Latin "seminarium" (meaning "seedbed") and is translated into English as "seminar" and into Japanese as "exercise." It is said that this type of education began in Europe as early as the 16th century for the training of clergymen, but as a university teaching method, it is said to have been created by the German linguist Johann Gesner at the University of Göttingen. It is said to have been introduced to Japan by Heinrich Wäntig, who taught economics at the Imperial University of Tokyo from 1910.
