A village in Nakatsugaru County, southern Aomori Prefecture. Population 3,828 (1995). Located in the Soma River basin, a tributary of the Iwaki River, it borders Akita Prefecture at the borders of Dokurobomori and Chokeimori in the Shirakami Mountains. It is a mountain village with forests, mostly national forests, making up over 80% of the village area. There are only a few rice paddies downstream of the Soma River and around the central settlement of Gosho, near the confluence with the Iwaki River. Apple cultivation is the village's main industry in the hills. The Funauchi Mine, which mainly produced zinc ore, began operation in 1933, but was closed in 1963. In 1978, the Minegoshi Forest Road Tashiro-Soma Line was opened, connecting the village to Tashiro Town in Akita Prefecture. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
