208 koro-235 Roman Emperor. Reigned 222-235. Born in Emesa, Syria, he was adopted by his cousin, Emperor Elagabalus, and ascended to the throne after his death. He was guardian of his mother, Julia Mamaea, and is said to have been a wise emperor, working hard to cooperate with the Senate, to alleviate poverty, and to promote industry. However, despite defeating the Sassanid Empire on the eastern front (233), he adopted a policy of appeasement toward the Germanic peoples who had invaded Gaul. This caused the army to resent him, and he was assassinated along with his mother. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
