Roman Emperor. Reigned 222-235. Born in Emesa, Syria, he was adopted by his cousin, Emperor Elagabalus, and ascended to the throne after his death. He was guardian of his mother, Julia Mamaea, and is said to have been a wise emperor, working hard to cooperate with the Senate, to alleviate poverty, and to promote industry. However, despite defeating the Sassanid Empire on the eastern front (233), he adopted a policy of appeasement toward the Germanic peoples who had invaded Gaul. This caused the army to resent him, and he was assassinated along with his mother.

ローマ皇帝。在位222‐235年。シリアのエメサに生まれ，従兄エラガバルス帝の養子となり，その死後帝位に就いた。母ユリア･ママエアJulia Mamaeaの後見を受けたが，元老院との協調，救貧対策，産業の振興に腐心し，賢帝の誉れが高かったと伝えられる。しかし，東部戦線におけるササン朝ペルシアの撃退(233)にもかかわらず，ガリアに侵入したゲルマン人に対して宥和政策をとったことから，軍隊の反感をかい，母とともに暗殺された。
