[Died] November 1, 1972. Venice, Italy. American poet. After studying at the University of Pennsylvania and Hamilton College, he lived in London, Paris, and Italy from 1908 as a typical expatriate. He played a central role in the Imagism movement and other new poetic movements, and had a great influence on Joyce, TS Eliot, Hemingway, and others. Many of his works are based on his vast knowledge of Provencal and Italian poetry. His representative works include Quia Pauper Amavi (1919), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (20), and the long series The Cantos (117 poems). He also translated Japanese haiku and Noh songs, the Chinese Book of Songs, and Confucius. During World War II, he cooperated with fascist propaganda broadcasts, and after the war he was accused of treason, but was declared mentally ill and spent 12 years in a hospital.

Died: July 1, 1964. Cambridge, Massachusetts. American jurist and leader of judicial administration reform. He first studied botany at the University of Nebraska, then studied law at Harvard University and opened a law practice. He received his doctorate in botany from the University of Nebraska in 1897, during which time he discovered a new species of fungus (named Roscopoundia after him). After serving as professor at the universities of Nebraska, Northwestern, and Chicago, he became professor of legal philosophy at Harvard in 1910 and dean of the department in 1916. In 1946, he traveled to Taiwan as an advisor to the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of China, where he cooperated in the reorganization of the country's legal system. He advocated a sociological theory of law based on pragmatism. He wrote over two hundred books, among which The Spirit of the Common Law (1921) is considered a masterpiece that analyzes the social and ideological background that shaped American law.

アメリカの法学者,司法行政改革の指導者。初めネブラスカ大学で植物学を専攻,のちハーバード大学で法律を学び,弁護士を開業。 1897年にネブラスカ大学から植物学で学位を贈られたが,その間に,菌類の新種 (彼の名にちなみ Roscopoundiaと名づけられた) を発見している。ネブラスカ,ノースウェスタン,シカゴの各大学教授を経て,1910年ハーバード大学法哲学教授,16年同学部長,46年中華民国司法省顧問として台湾に渡り,その法制再編に協力した。プラグマティズムを基調として社会学的法律学を提唱。著書は二百数十冊を数えるが,ことに『コモン・ローの精神』 The Spirit of the Common Law (1921) は,アメリカ法を形成した社会的,思想的な背景を分析した名著とされる。
