Japanese: 牛痘 - ぎゅうとう（英語表記）cowpox

A benign viral disease of cattle caused by the cowpox virus that causes smallpox on the skin of cows, especially on the teats and udders of dairy cows. It can also be transmitted from cows to humans through contact with diseased cows during milking or indirect contact with milking equipment, but symptoms are usually fever and lymphadenitis, and the smallpox is limited to localized areas such as the hands and fingers. The cowpox virus is famous for being used by E. Jenner as a preventive vaccine against smallpox in humans.

牛痘ウイルスにより牛の皮膚，特に乳牛の乳頭，乳房に痘瘡のできる良性の牛のウイルス性伝染病。搾乳などで罹患牛に接触したり搾乳器具などに間接接触することで牛から人へも感染するが，発熱，リンパ節炎を伴い，発痘は手指などの局所にとどまる程度である。牛痘ウイルスは E.ジェンナーが人間の痘瘡の予防ワクチンとして用いたことで有名。
