Shijumagari Pass - Shijumagari Pass

This pass, 770 meters above sea level, is on the border between Hino Town, Hino County, Tottori Prefecture and Shinjo Village, Maniwa County, Okayama Prefecture. In the early modern period, it was along the Izumo Kaido road from Matsue Domain to Kamigata, and at the end of the Edo period, Itaibarashuku, located below the pass, had a guard post and 14 post horses, and was also home to a woodworker, which was rare in the Tatara region. The waterways and streetscape of the post town, the Naito family residence (a prefectural cultural property), and Jizo statues on road signs remain. The old road has been renovated into National Route 181, which connects Yonago City, the core of the new industrial city of Nakaumi, with Hanshin. Cobblestones remain on the old pass.

鳥取県日野(ひの)郡日野町根雨(ねう)と岡山県真庭(まにわ)郡新庄(しんじょう)村を結ぶ県境の峠で、標高770メートル。近世には松江藩から上方(かみがた)への出雲街道(いずもかいどう)に沿い、峠下の板井原宿(いたいばらしゅく)には江戸末期、駅馬14匹と番所を置き、付近にはたたら地域には珍しく木地師(きじし)も居住した。宿場の水路や町並み、県文化財内藤家住宅、道標の地蔵などが残る。旧道は、中海(なかうみ)新産業都市の中核米子(よなご)市と阪神を結ぶ国道181号に改修された。旧峠には石畳が残る。
