Paionios - Paionios (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek sculptor. Born in Mende, Thrace, active in the second half of the 5th century BC. Creator of the statue of Nike, the goddess of victory descending from the sky, discovered in Olympia in 1875 (commonly known as "Nike of Paionios" at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia). This marble statue was originally placed on a 9-meter-high triangular pillar on the east side of the Temple of Zeus, and according to an inscription on the base, it was made to commemorate the victory of the Messenians and Naupactians over the Spartans in 421 BC. He is also known to have decorated the acroterion of the Temple of Zeus. The 2nd century AD travel writer Pausanias reports that he also created the sculptures on the east pedestal of the Temple of Zeus together with Alcamenes, but the veracity of this is uncertain.
