〘Noun〙① A general term for various techniques used to decide a match in sumo. According to ancient law, there are four techniques : bending the head and neck, twisting with the hands, throwing with the hips, and hanging with the legs, and each has 12 variations, making a total of 48 techniques. However, there are various theories depending on the school and era. Currently, the Japan Sumo Association has set 70 rules, and all sumo matches are based on these. *Toraakirahon Kyogen Bunsumo (late Muromachi period - early modern period) "Although it is said that there are 48 sumo techniques" ② Various means and methods in each field. 〘名〙① 相撲で、勝負をきめる種々の技の総称。古法によれば、頭・首でする反(そ)り、手によるひねり、腰による投げ、足による掛けの四手があり、それぞれに一二の変化があり合計四八手あるとしている。しかし流派や時代により諸説がある。現在は日本相撲協会が七〇手のきまり手をきめており、これにすべて準拠している。※虎明本狂言・文相撲（室町末‐近世初）「すまふの手は四十八手とは申せども」② それぞれの分野でのさまざまな手段や方法。特に、性愛でのさまざまな体位。※俳諧・西鶴五百韻（1679）早何「奇異のくせ者と引くんで寝る〈西友〉なげの情四十八手の思日事〈西六〉」[補注]「異制庭訓往来」に「又相撲有_二四十八之取手_一」とある。
