According to ancient law, there are four techniques : bending the head and neck, twisting with the hands, throwing with the hips, and hanging with the legs, and each has 12 variations, making a total of 48 techniques. However, there are various theories depending on the school and era. 〘名〙① 相撲で、勝負をきめる種々の技の総称。古法によれば、頭・首でする反(そ)り、手によるひねり、腰による投げ、足による掛けの四手があり、それぞれに一二の変化があり合計四八手あるとしている。しかし流派や時代により諸説がある。現在は日本相撲協会が七〇手のきまり手をきめており、これにすべて準拠している。※虎明本狂言・文相撲(室町末‐近世初)「すまふの手は四十八手とは申せども」② それぞれの分野でのさまざまな手段や方法。特に、性愛でのさまざまな体位。※俳諧・西鶴五百韻(1679)早何「奇異のくせ者と引くんで寝る〈西友〉 なげの情四十八手の思日事〈西六〉」[補注]「異制庭訓往来」に「又相撲有二四十八之取手一」とある。
