Masamoto Hosokawa

A military commander in the Muromachi period. His childhood name was Soumeimaru. He was commonly known as Kuro. He was the Ukyo no Daibu (Ukyo Chamberlain). He was the son of Katsumoto. He became Kanrei in July 1486. He handed the position over to Hatakeyama Masanaga, but was briefly reinstated in August 1487 and July 1490, after which he monopolized the position from December 1494 until his death in 1507. He was the Shugo of Settsu, Tanba, Sanuki, and Tosa. In July 1421 (intercalary month), he ordered the Naishu Yakushiji Motonaga and others to attack the Ibaraki clan, a local lord of Settsu, and in September 1520, he accompanied Shogun Ashikaga Yoshihisa on his campaign to Omi. In September 1522, a peasant uprising broke out in Kyoto and burned down Shimogyo, but he put it down. In August 1600, he was appointed as the governor of Omi, and in August of the following year, he participated in the campaign of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiki (Yoshitane) in Omi. He had no biological children, so in February 1603, he adopted Kujo Masamoto's son Sumiyuki, and in May 1503, Sumimoto was also adopted from Awa. It is said that the reason Masamoto had no biological children was because he was absorbed in homosexuality and Shugendo. In the "Masamune-ko Tabihikitsuki," there is an article in which Yakushiji Genichi exposes Masamoto's homosexuality, and he also tried to go on a journey to practice Shugendo. In April 1602, he dispatched members of the inner circle, including Yasutomi Motoie and Uehara Motohide, to attack Shogun Yoshiki and Hatakeyama Masanaga, who were in the midst of subjugating Hatakeyama Motoie in Kawachi, forcing Masanaga to commit suicide and capturing Yoshiki. He supported Yoshizumi as the new Shogun and gained power, but Yoshiki escaped and continued to resist. In September 1512, a rebellion by Yakushiji Genichi, a member of the inner circle, broke out, and Akazawa Chokei also temporarily responded to this. Although the rebellion was suppressed, he was assassinated while bathing in his own home by members of the inner circle, including Kozai Motonaga and Yakushiji Nagatada, who were trying to support Sumiyuki.

室町時代の武将。幼名聡明丸。通称九郎。右京大夫。勝元の子。文明18(1486)年7月管領となる。いったんは畠山政長に譲るが,長享1(1487)年8月,延徳2(1490)年7月と短期間復職したのち,明応3(1494)年12月から永正4(1507)年に死去するまで同職を独占した。摂津,丹波,讃岐,土佐の守護。文明14年閏7月内衆薬師寺元長らに命じて摂津国人茨木氏を討ち,長享1年9月には将軍足利義尚の近江出陣に従った。同2年9月,京都で土一揆が起こり下京を焼いたが,これを鎮圧。延徳2年8月近江守護に補任され,翌年8月将軍足利義材(義稙)の近江出陣にも参陣している。実子がなく,延徳3年2月九条政基の子澄之を養子とし,文亀3(1503)年5月には澄元も養子として阿波から迎えられた。政元に実子がなかった理由として,その男色と修験道への没頭がいわれている。『政基公旅引付』には薬師寺元一が政元の男色を暴露した記事がみられ,修験道修行のため遊行に出ようとしたこともあった。明応2年閏4月,内衆の安富元家,上原元秀らを派遣して,河内の畠山基家討伐中の将軍義材と畠山政長を攻撃,政長を自殺させ義材を捕らえた。新将軍に義澄を擁立して権力を手中にするが,義材は脱出して抵抗を続けた。永正1年9月には内衆薬師寺元一の反乱が起こり,赤沢朝経も一時これに呼応。この乱は鎮圧したものの,澄之の擁立を図る内衆香西元長,薬師寺長忠らにより自邸で入浴中暗殺された。
