Yamatokoriyama [city] - Yamatokoriyama

Japanese: 大和郡山[市] - やまとこおりやま
Yamatokoriyama [city] - Yamatokoriyama
Nara City is located in the northwest of Nara Prefecture, occupying the central-northern part of the Nara Basin. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Koriyama, the center of Nara Prefecture, developed after the castle was built by Hidenaga, the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in 1585. In the early modern period, it prospered as a castle town of the Yanagisawa clan with a fief of 150,000 koku, and the castle town form has been well preserved. It is served by the Kansai Main Line and the Kintetsu Kashihara Line, and the Tenri Line branches off from it. It is also served by the Nishi-Meihan Expressway. In recent years, it has become a commuter town for Kyoto City, but the Showa Industrial Park in the south is home to factories that produce low-voltage electrical appliances, machinery, food, plastics, and other products, making it the center of inland industry and distribution. A shoe industrial park has also been completed, and men's shoe production is thriving. Goldfish farming, which began as a side job for samurai, is also thriving, and is exported overseas. Akahada pottery and hosiery are also produced here, and Yamato watermelons, strawberries, and Chinese cabbage are also produced in abundance. The area includes the teahouse and garden of Jikoin Temple (a scenic spot and historic site) built by Katagiri Sekishu, the Nukatabe kiln ruins (historic site), the Hieda settlement, famous as a typical moated settlement, and Yata Kongo-ji Temple, famous for its hydrangeas. 42.69 km2 . Population: 89,023 (2010).
