Sansovino, Andrea
Born: Around 1460, Monte Sansovino
[Died] 1529. Italian sculptor and architect from Loreto. His real name was Andrea Contucci. He studied in the workshop of A. Pollaiuolo, but was influenced by the classical style of Bramante and Raphael. He was sent by L. Medici twice to Portugal from 1491 to 1499, but his activities there are not known. His first monumental work was the Baptism of Christ (1502-05) for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence. Two tombstones, the Tomb of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza (09, in the Basilica of Santa del Popolo) and the Tomb of Cardinal Girolamo Passo della Rovere (09, in the same building), which represent the pinnacle of his classical style and which established the style of tombstones that was popular in the 16th century. From 1813 onwards, under the orders of Pope Leo X, he worked as chief sculptor for the Basilica of Santa Casa in Loreto, where he produced such reliefs as the Annunciation (18-24) and the Adoration of the Pastors (18-24).
