1784‐1833 King of Spain. Reigned 1808, 14-33. Son of Carlos IV, who was forced to cede the throne to Prince Ferdinand in March 1808 due to the Aranjuez Rebellion. However, when Napoleon, who had begun to invade Spain, called Ferdinand VII to Bayonne, he was forced to return the throne to his father, Carlos IV. Carlos IV was forced to cede the Spanish throne to Napoleon, and Napoleon's brother Joseph became King of Spain, José I. After the defeat of Napoleon's army from the Iberian Peninsula in March 1814, Ferdinand VII returned from exile, abolished the liberal constitution established in 1812, and began to rule as an absolutist monarch.
