His Historia animalium (1551-87), a large-scale work, marked the transition from the didactic animal records of the Middle Ages to modern zoological books. It attempted to comprehensively describe all the information known at the time, while placing emphasis on actual observational facts, and summarized the external structure, location, habits, and anatomical characteristics of animals, accompanied by realistic illustrations by the leading painters of the time.
