A member of the grass family. It is also called Nigatake (bitter bamboo) or Kuretake (gore bamboo). It grows wild or is cultivated from southern China to Myanmar. It is a large bamboo and is the most commonly cultivated in Japan. It grows to a height of about 18 m and a diameter of about 10 cm. The leaves are about 10 cm long and 15 mm wide. There are two high rings at the nodes, and two branches grow out. Five to six leaves grow in a palm-like shape at the end of the twigs. The bark is almost hairless and has dark spots. The wood is strong and easy to split and bend, so it is often used for handicrafts, and has a wide range of uses such as rulers and building materials because it does not stretch much. It is also famous for being used by Edison as the filament for incandescent light bulbs.
