Herrera, Juan Bautista de
[Born] 1530. Movelan
Died in 1597. Madrid. Spanish Renaissance architect. Became court architect to Philip II in 1559. In 1563, he started work on the El Escorial Monastery together with V. Toledo. After Toledo's death (1567), he continued the design and construction until completion in 1584, realizing full-scale Renaissance architecture in Spain. His style, which suppressed the decorative tastes unique to Spain and incorporated the mathematical harmony and monumentality of Italian Renaissance architecture, was called the Herrera Style (→ Desornamentado Style), and it became the mainstream of Spanish architecture until the 17th century.
