Jiji Shinpo - Jiji Shinpo

Japanese:
Jiji Shinpo - Jiji Shinpo
A daily newspaper founded by Yukichi Fukuzawa on March 1, 1882. At the time, the Seiron Shimbun newspaper in Tokyo was in its heyday as the organ newspaper of the Liberal Party, the Progressive Party, and the Imperial Party, but as a neutral newspaper (although with some Progressive Party influence) that espoused "independence and harmony between the government and the private sector," it garnered support from readers and was regarded as Japan's leading newspaper until the mid-Taisho period, earning the nickname "Japan's No. 1 Jiji Shimpo." The company was run by graduates of Keio University, and in 1892 it signed an exclusive communications contract with Reuters, appealing to readers by featuring a wealth of economic articles. In particular, on March 1, 1907, it published a 224-page special issue to commemorate its 25th anniversary, surprising the public. However, due to the poor performance of the Osaka Jiji, which had been launched in 1905 just before that, the company's management continued to deteriorate, and it was dealt a decisive blow by the Great Kanto Earthquake. At one point, Kanebo's Muto Sanji took over management of the paper, but it ceased publication with the December 28, 1936 issue. After World War II, it was relaunched with the New Year's Day issue of 1946, but was unsuccessful, and in 1955 it was absorbed into the Sankei Shimbun and became Sankei Jiji, dropping the name Jiji in a 1958 name change. However, it is an important newspaper to remember in the history of the development of Japanese newspapers, from political debate newspapers to news newspapers.
