In 1946, the Congolese Progressive Party (PPC) was founded in the south, and a branch of the French Socialist Party was formed in the north; the latter later came to call itself the Movement for Socialism in Africa (MSA). In 1956, Abbé Fulbert Youlou (1917-72) founded the Democratic Union for the Defense of African Interests (UDDIA), which weakened the influence of the PPC and created a situation in which the UDDIA and the MSA were in conflict. The MSA won the regional parliamentary elections in 1957, but the UDDIA won a majority in the 1958 elections, and when France moved to the Fifth Republic in the same year, the Congo became an autonomous republic within the French Community in November, with UDDIA leader Youlou becoming prime minister. ...
