1614‐74 Icelandic pastor and religious poet. He went to Copenhagen as a boy, where he became acquainted with a fellow countryman and bishop and studied at the Maria School. He later returned to Iceland and became a pastor, but he contracted leprosy and became blind in his later years before dying. He composed many devout church songs, didactic poems, and hymns, and his Passion Hymn (1666) is considered the finest piece of religious literature in Iceland.
