Located in Kirishima Taguchi, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The main deity is Amenigishikuninigishi Amatsuhidakahikohohoninigi-no-mikoto, and the shrine enshrines Konohanasakuyahime-no-mikoto, Amatsuhidakahikohohodemi-no-mikoto, Toyotamahime-no-mikoto, Ugayafukiaezu-no-mikoto, Tamayorihime-no-mikoto, and Kamuyamatoiwarehiko-no-mikoto. According to the shrine's history, the shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. The entry for August 1st, 837, in the Shoku Nihon Kōki, states that Kirishima-no-Mine-no-Kami of Morokata County, Hyuga Province, was given the title of official shrine. The entry for October 22nd, 858, in the Sandai Jitsuroku, states that Kirishima-no-Kami of Hyuga Province was given the rank of Junior Fourth Rank. Under the Engi system, it was ranked as a small shrine. During the Kamakura period, the shrine building was burned down in a major eruption of Mount Kirishima, and was later moved to Mount Nagao, east of the mountain, and named Higashi Kirishima Shrine. In 1484 (Bunmei 16), Shimazu Tadamasa divided the shrine into an east and west shrine, moving the east shrine to Setoo (now called Kirishima Higashi Shrine), and the west shrine is the current Kirishima Jingu. Until 1874 (Meiji 7), it was called Kirishima Shrine, and was highly revered by successive generations of the Satsuma clan and the general public. In the same year, it was renamed Kirishima Jingu Shrine and was listed as a Kanpei Taisha (Great Shrine of the Imperial Court). Its annual festival is held on September 19th. Other events include the Uchimakisai (Scattering Rice Ceremony) on January 1st of the lunar calendar, the Otaue Festival (Rice Planting Festival) on February 4th of the lunar calendar, the Sarutahiko no Mikoto Procession Festival four times a year, twice in spring and autumn, and the Tenson Korin Memorial Festival on November 10th. [Ishu Ochiai] From the front, there is the Imperial Envoy Hall, the Worship Hall, and the Main Hall (all of which are designated as Important Cultural Properties by the national government).
