A surgical procedure in which a limb is amputated at a certain point and then separated from the distal part for medical purposes. Amputation at a joint is called disarticulation. Amputation becomes necessary when there is necrosis of the limb, malignant tumor, severe trauma, infection (in life-threatening cases such as gas gangrene, or when pus continues to drain from chronic, intractable purulent osteomyelitis), or deformity. In recent years, advances in prosthetic limb manufacturing and device technology have made it possible to amputate at a high level, fairly close to the trunk, but in principle, efforts are made to leave as long a stump as possible.
