A large perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae). The stem is 1-2 meters tall. The leaves are large, 2-3 times trilobed, compound, and hairy on the underside of the veins. The base of the petiole swells into a sheath. From August to October, it produces large, umbrella-shaped umbels that reach a diameter of 50 cm, and bloom with white flowers. The fruits are elliptical, about 8 mm long, and have broad wings. It grows in mountain grasslands and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The roots are called udon roots and are used for medicinal purposes. Amanyu is similar to this species, but can be distinguished by its lack of hair on the leaves and the presence of small involucre leaves at the base of the flower stalk. There are 110 species in the Angelica genus, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan, in addition to the above species, there are 19 species, including A. japonica A. Gray, which grows on the coasts from Honshu to Okinawa. The genus name Angelica is derived from the Latin angelus, meaning angel, because one species in this genus is said to be so effective as a cardiac stimulant that it can even resurrect the dead. The ingredients (coloring and flavoring) of Western-style sweets commonly known as angelica are the candied stems and petioles of A. archangelica Hoffm., another species that grows in the high mountains of Europe.
