Japanese: テングサ(天草) - テングサ（英語表記）Gelidium

A type of seaweed in the family Amanita family of the order Amanitales. It generally grows on rocks in the bathyal zone of warm seas, but some species and in some cases grow on rocks near the low tide line. It is 10-30 cm tall, and some are flat or filamentous. All are highly branched. The main species are G. amansii, G. japonicum , G. subcostatum , G. subfastigiatum , and G. pacificum , and are the source of agar. Some of these algae form tetraspores and others form carpospores, but they look the same, and the difference becomes clear only when the reproductive parts of the mature alga are cut.

紅藻類のテングサ目テングサ科の海藻。概して暖海の漸深帯の深部の岩上に着生するが，種によって，また場合によって低潮線付近の岩に生じるものもある。高さ 10～30cm，扁平のものもあり，また糸状のものもある。いずれもよく分枝する。マクサ G. amansii，オニクサ G. japonicum，ヒラクサ G. subcostatum，ナンブグサ G. subfastigiatum，オオブサ G. pacificumなどがそのおもな種で，いわゆる寒天の原藻となる。この藻類の藻体には四分胞子を形成するものと，果胞子を形成するものとがあるが，外観は同じで，成熟した藻体の生殖器部を切ってみて初めてその別が明らかになる。
