The capital of Corrientes Province in northeastern Argentina. It is a river port city located on the east bank of the Paraná River, about 800 km north of the capital Buenos Aires. It is the commercial and industrial center of the agricultural region behind it, distributing and processing cotton, rice, tobacco, timber, and citrus fruits. The port is an important port for shipping and transporting both the Paraná and Paraguay Rivers, located just downstream of their confluence. It is an old town built in 1588, and many colonial-era buildings are preserved within the city. The La Cruz Basilica is known for housing a 16th-century cross, and attracts pilgrims from all over the country. It is the location of the National University of Norte Este (1957). It is connected to the capital by waterway, railroad, and road. It is connected to Resistencia on the opposite bank of the Paraná River by a road bridge. Population: 267,742 (1991 estimate).
