…In painting, Jan Malouel (?-1415), the Limbourg brothers, who worked as miniature painters at the French court, and Bouts, who served as city painter in Leuven, are usually placed in the history of French and Flemish art, respectively, despite being from the north. Artistic activities in the north include the woodcarvings of Adriaen van Wesel (c. 1420-c. 1489) of Utrecht, and the traditional miniature production in the city. However, it was not until the middle of the century that the first school of painting that could be called truly Dutch emerged in Haarlem, with its founder Albert van Ouwater, of whom only one authentic work remains today, and his pupil Geertgen todt Sint Jans. …
