Jacques Prévert

French poet and screenwriter. He joined the Surrealist movement but left after a few years. From around 1930, he began publishing poetry in magazines while also working on film scripts. His first collection of poems, Words (1946), which included some older works, was widely loved for its scathing satire and simple lyricism in simple, everyday language, and sold better than any other collection of poems. It exposes the hypocrisy of the ruling class through subversive wordplay and parody, and sings in lively words of people's love, freedom, and hope for justice that is not bound by any political views. His other collections of poems include Stories (1946), Scenes (1951), Rain and Weather (1955), and A Collection (1965). As a screenwriter, he worked on such masterpieces as "Funny Drama" (1937), "Les le monde à mist" (1938), "Les écrits des mals" (1942), and "Les Enfants à paradise" (1945), directed by Marcel Carné. He is also widely known as the lyricist for "Autumn Leaves" and other popular songs composed by Cosma.

フランスの詩人、シナリオ作家。シュルレアリスム運動に参加したが数年後脱退。1930年ころから雑誌に詩文を発表するかたわら、映画のシナリオを手がけた。旧作を含む処女詩集『ことば』（1946）は、平易な日常的言語に込められた痛烈な風刺と素朴な叙情性によって広く愛唱され、詩集としては空前の売れ行きを示した。支配階級の偽善を破壊的なことば遊びやパロディーによって暴き出し、いかなる政治主張にもとらわれない民衆的な愛と自由と正義への希望を生気あふれることばで歌った作品である。ほかに『おはなし』（1946）、『光景』（1951）、『雨とお天気』（1955）、『寄せ集め』（1965）などの詩集がある。シナリオ作家としては、とくにマルセル・カルネ監督の傑作『おかしなドラマ』（1937）、『霧の波止場』（1938）、『悪魔が夜来る』（1942）、『天井桟敷(さじき)の人々』（1945）などを手がけた。またコスマの作曲による『枯葉』その他の流行歌の作詞者としても広く知られている。
