In forensic medicine, a body that is found under abnormal circumstances, regardless of the medical cause of death, is called an unnatural death. Unnatural deaths include deaths caused by external factors, deaths that are suspicious and are only determined to have been caused by illness after an autopsy, and even deaths with unknown causes. In contrast, in criminal law, an unnatural death is a death that is clearly due to an accident other than natural causes, illness, or natural disaster, and is not thought to have been the result of a criminal act. A judicial autopsy is conducted on unnatural deaths (Criminal Procedure Code, Article 229, Paragraph 1), and if the results reveal suspicion of a crime, an investigation (e.g., verification) is conducted by the investigative agency.
