Ballantine

Japanese:
Ballantine
A Russian-born dancer and choreographer. Also known as Balanchine. Born in St. Petersburg, but his parents were from Georgia. In 1921, he graduated from the Petrograd State (formerly Imperial) Choreographic School and danced at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre (now the Mariinsky Theatre). In 1924, he left the Soviet Union to perform abroad, and later, Diaghilev recognized his talent for choreography and he joined the Ballets Russes. His works from this period, Apollo Leading the Muses (1928, music by Stravinsky) and The Prodigal Son (1929, music by Prokofiev), are still frequently performed today. After Diaghilev's sudden death in 1929 and the dissolution of the company, Balanchine was commissioned by ballet companies all over Europe and choreographed many works. In 1933, he went to the United States at the invitation of art lover L. Kirsten (1907-1996), and the following year he founded the American Ballet School. Using this as a base, he founded the American Ballet Company, which later evolved into the New York City Ballet. After moving to the United States, Balanchine's style increasingly leaned towards abstraction, which could be described as a visualization of music, and he left behind a huge number of works. In particular, he choreographed many pieces to the music of his longtime friend Stravinsky, and his native Russia's Tchaikovsky. He also left behind many choreographies for films and musicals. His main works include Serenade (1934, a piece for Tchaikovsky), Crystal Palace (Symphony in C Major, Symphony in C) (1947, a piece for Bizet), Agon (1957, a piece for Stravinsky), and Who Cares (1970, a piece for Gershwin). →Danilova/The Firebird/Markova →Related articlesRobbins
