Born: September 11, 1861 in Lapinlahti
Died: August 8, 1921. Finnish novelist. Born Johannes Brofeldt, the son of a pastor, he studied at the University of Helsinki but dropped out to become a member of the liberal group Young Finland. He worked as a journalist for over 40 years, and in 1906 became a professor emeritus at his alma mater. His early works such as Rautatie (1884) (Railroad) portrayed simple peasants in a humorous way, partly due to the influence of millet, and he became a leading figure in realism literature. Papin tytär (85), which deals with the conservative middle class, is reminiscent of BM Björnson's humanism and HJ Ibsen's women's liberation. He was once influenced by Maupassant and Daudet, and leaned towards French naturalism. Yksin (90) (Alone) and Papin rouva (93) (The Pastor's Wife) are works from that period. Other works he produced include Panu (97), Kevät ja takatalvi (Spring and Winter) (1906), the autobiographical work Juha (11), the satirical Omatunto (Conscience) (14), Rauhan erakko (The Obstacle of Peace) (16), written in his later years, and the collection of essays Lastuja (8 volumes, 1891-1921).
