… It was during World War II that British universities first fully fulfilled their role in training Japanese studies specialists. At the Oriental School, University of London, Frank James Daniels, a professor of Japanese, and Francis Stewart Gilderoy Piggott (1883-1966), a former military attaché to Japan, organized an intensive Japanese language course for wartime personnel serving in Japan, and several hundred students were sent there. Most of the leaders of Japanese studies at universities after the war came from this group. …
