Spanish poet. Born in Moguer in Andalusia. At the age of 19, he abandoned his studies and went to Madrid. His series of works, such as "Heart of Violets" (1900) and the subsequent "Aria of Sorrow" (1903), are full of romantic lyricism and modernist music and color. His sensual and intimate style of poetry, such as "Echoes of Solitude" from around 1910, changed completely after his marriage to his lifelong partner Cenovia in 1916 and his subsequent trip to America. "Diary of a Newlywed Poet" (1917) is the culmination of this. He advocated naked poetry without any decoration, and introspective and intellectual poetry, and "Stone and Sky" (1919) is an extension of this. This journey of poetic exploration reached a state of completion as he continued with "All Seasons" (1936) and "The Beast in the Depths" (1949). The poet's consciousness achieves a mystical fusion with nature, and he obtains the only expression, the God he speaks of. In 1939, he escaped the civil war and lived in Puerto Rico, USA. In 1956, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. His work includes the masterpiece of prose poetry, "Platero and I" (1917).
