Cyclobutadiene

It is the simplest cyclic hydrocarbon compound with conjugated double bonds in the ring. It has two double bonds in a four-membered ring consisting of four carbon atoms, and is highly distorted. For a long time, various attempts to synthesize it were unsuccessful, but in 1965, R. Pettit showed that the ligand cyclobutadiene was liberated by the reaction of a cyclobutadiene-iron carbonyl complex with a tetravalent cerium salt. This compound is unstable near room temperature, and immediately reacts with other coexisting compounds or dimerizes itself.

環内に共役二重結合を有する環式炭化水素のうちの最も簡単な化合物。炭素原子4個からなる4員環内に二重結合を2個有し，きわめてひずみが大きい。長い間その合成が種々試みられ不成功に終わっていたが，1965年プティR.Pettitにより，シクロブタジエン‐鉄カルボニル錯体と4価セリウム塩との反応で，配位子であるシクロブタジエンが遊離されることが示された。このものは常温付近では不安定で，ただちに他の共存する化合物と反応するか，それ自身二量化する。
