…They are divided into two groups: the relatively primitive group (the suborder Anura) and the relatively new group (the suborder Anura). The first examples of the Anura include the Leiopelmatidae of New Zealand, which have only vestigial tail-moving muscles remaining in adults, and the Ascaphidae of the northwestern United States. The former are also called "living fossils," and the larvae of the Ascaphidae survive metamorphosis in the eggs and emerge, but their tails remain for a while.
