They were the first people to establish a state in ancient Azerbaijan in the first half of the 1st millennium BC. They were first mentioned in the records of an Assyrian campaign in 829 BC. They were repeatedly attacked by Urartu after that, but continued to resist and established a unified kingdom in the 8th century BC. In 715 BC, they cooperated with Sargon II of Assyria to defeat Urartu. Their capital, Izirtu, was located south of Lake Urmia (Rezayeh), and they controlled almost the entire area of southern Azerbaijan. The well-irrigated mountain valleys of the Zagros and the Lake Urmia plain were suitable for growing grains and grapes and raising horses, and metalworking was developed.
