…The Hebrew word berîṯ is thought to be related to the noun form birîtu (bondage) of the Akkadian word barû (to bind), and originally meant that individuals or groups entered into a mutually binding relationship under a certain promise. In the Old Testament, this word was applied to the religious relationship between God and the people of Israel, and Moses, representing the people, made a covenant with God on Mount Sinai, establishing a covenant relationship in which God became the God of Israel and Israel became God's people. This is called the Sinai Covenant.
