Chronicles of the Koyo Army

Japanese: 甲陽軍記物 - こうようぐんきもの
Chronicles of the Koyo Army
It is a branch of storytelling, puppet theater, and kabuki/kyogen. Based on the Koyo Gunkan, this is a group of works themed on the conflict between Takeda Shingen of Kai and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo, as well as their deeds, centering on the Battle of Kawanakajima. One of the highlights is the exploits of Yamamoto Kansuke, Shingen's military strategist. It was adapted into storytelling as the Kawanakajima Gunki, and was popular among the common people of Edo. As a puppet theater, the early masterpiece is Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Shinshu Kawanakajima Kassen, which was performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in August 1721 (Kyoho 6). The earlier Koyo Gunkan Imayo Sugata, written by Ki Kaion, is estimated to have premiered before the autumn of 1715 (Shotoku 5).
