British physicist and chemist. Grandson of the 2nd Duke of Devonshire, he was born in Nice, France. He studied at Cambridge University, but did not like socializing, remaining single all his life and spending most of his time in his laboratory in his private home. Much of his research remained unpublished, and was published by Maxwell after his death.
