Cavendish
British physicist and chemist. Grandson of the 2nd Duke of Devonshire, he was born in Nice, France. He studied at Cambridge University, but did not like socializing, remaining single all his life and spending most of his time in his laboratory in his private home. Much of his research remained unpublished, and was published by Maxwell after his death. His achievements include research on static electricity, the measurement of the gravitational constant using an intricate torsion balance, research on latent heat and specific heat, the discovery of hydrogen (1766), and the determination of the composition of water. → Cavendish Laboratory → Related topic: Water

Cavendish

English navigator. In 1586, he set sail from Plymouth with three ships, sailed down the Atlantic Ocean, and passed through South America, the Philippines, Java, and the Cape of Good Hope, returning to the United States in 1588. He became the third man to circumnavigate the globe, after Magellan and Drake. He later died during the voyage.

キャベンディシュ

英国の航海家。1586年3隻の船を率いてプリマスを出帆,大西洋を南下し,南米からフィリピン,ジャワ,喜望峰を経て1588年帰国,マゼラン,ドレークに続く3人目の世界周航者となった。のち航海中に没した。
