A former town in Usui County in the southwest of Gunma Prefecture. It occupies the Usui River basin, a tributary of the Tone River, with Usui Pass on the western border. Matsuida, in the center, developed as a post town and market town on the mountain roads of the early modern period, and is served by the Shinetsu Main Line and the Joshinetsu Expressway. Silkworm farming and livestock farming are thriving here, and the town also produces rice, konjac, green onions, and shiitake mushrooms. It is the trailhead for Mt. Myogi. 群馬県南西部,碓氷(うすい)郡の旧町。利根川の支流碓氷川の流域を占め,西境に碓氷峠がある。中心の松井田は近世の中山道の宿場町,市場町として発達し,信越本線,上信越自動車道が通じる。養蚕,畜産が盛んで,米,コンニャク,ネギ,シイタケなども産する。妙義山の登山口。2006年3月安中市へ編入。175.05km2。1万7295人(2003)。
