Japanese: アオガエル(青蛙) - アオガエル

A general term for green-colored frogs in the Rhacophoridae family. Most green frogs are arboreal and relatively large, measuring around 8cm in length, with males being slightly smaller. The forest green frog Rhacophorus arboreus (illustration), found in Honshu and Shikoku and known for its unusual spawning habits, is a typical type of green frog in both morphology and ecology. Each of the four limbs has well-developed suckers, and the back of the body changes color depending on the environment, from yellow-green to dark green or brownish green.

アオガエル科Rhacophoridaeのうち，とくに緑色をしたカエル類の総称。アオガエル類の大半は樹上性で，体長8cm前後の比較的大型が多く，雄は少し小さい。本州，四国に分布し，変わった産卵習性の持主として知られるモリアオガエルRhacophorus arboreus（イラスト）は，形態，生態ともにアオガエルの典型的なタイプといえよう。四肢の各指には吸盤が発達し，体の背面は黄緑色から濃緑色あるいは褐色がかった緑色まで，環境に応じて体色を変化させる。
