Take-off is a term used by American economist WW Rostow (1916- ) to express the fact that, just as an airplane gradually gains speed as it moves forward on a runway, it takes off and continues to climb when it reaches a certain speed, so too does a traditional society begin to rapidly modernize when the momentum of change reaches a certain level. It can be translated as "take-off." Rostow's major work, The Stages of Economic Growth, A Non-Communist Manifesto (1960), divides economic growth into five stages.
