Japanese: アオオサムシ - あおおさむし

An insect of the family Carabidae (illustration) in the order Coleoptera. It is endemic to Japan and is distributed in Honshu north of the Kinki region, and is commonly seen from the Kanto and Chubu regions to the Tohoku region. The body and legs are black, but the back is shiny gold-green, and sometimes copper-colored. Body length is 25 to 32 mm. At night, it preys on small animals including insects, but especially prefers earthworms. It overwinters as an adult and emerges from around April. It lays eggs in the soil from spring to summer. The hatched larvae roam the ground like the adults and prey on small animals.

甲虫目オサムシ科の昆虫（イラスト）。日本特産で近畿地方以北の本州に分布し，関東･中部地方から東北地方にかけてふつうに見られる。体と脚は黒色であるが，背面は金緑色の光沢があり，ときには赤銅色。体長25～32mm。夜間，昆虫を含む小動物を捕食するが，とくにミミズを好んで食べる。成虫で越冬し，4月ごろから出現する。春から夏にかけて土中へ産卵。孵化（ふか）した幼虫は成虫と同様に地上を歩き回り，小動物を捕食する。
